Collector C. R. Gloyd

C.R. Gloyd (stuartguru) has the largest collection of Stuart toys. Because of his love for these toys and his impressive collection, it is a permanent part of the Stuart Web site.

I was born in Branson, Missouri where I still reside with my wife, Shelly. I'm a retired meat cutter. As one of twelve children, money for toys was tight but I still remember the pleasure I got playing cowboys and Indians with my Marx playset and Stuart horses and riders. About seven years ago on a whim I went to a City-wide garage sale for no other reason than I'd never been to one before. There I met a man who had some plastic figures for sale. In a glass case were some figures I recognized from my childhood.

I asked the guy about them and he said he had brought it for display only. I talked to him for several minutes, asking why on earth he would bring stuff to a sale and not sell it. After a while I found out the toys in question where from the Stuart toy company. All I knew is that they were the same ones I had bought at the dime store when I was young and now I had to have them. I told him I used to call the red (Roy Rogers) Kit Carson and the white (Roy) Wild Bill Hickok.

Probably to shut me up, the man reached into his case and handed me a horse and rider. He just gave it to me and that began a quest for a lost childhood. When I left the garage sale I was armed with an outdated copy of Toy Shop and a head full of childhood memories. I started my collection with a Marx Roy Rogers Ranch set like I had as a kid. I was amazed I could find this stuff after all of these years. I couldn't image why a kid would have a set like this and not play with it. All of my toys had been well-played-with and that set was like new. As time passed and I talked to more people, asking about Stuart horses, figures and accessories.

All were glad to get rid of it as everyone seemed to be wanting the Marx stuff and nobody wanted Stuart. The bigger toy dealers would send me lists of Stuarts they had and some would even send me the items with an enclosed bill. I told them I would take it all. People used to laugh but I didn't care, some even called me the Guru of Stuart but to me that was a compliment. I loved the stuff. Before I knew it I had obtained perhaps the largest collection of Stuart that anyone had ever seen. I probably have over two thousand horses and hundreds of Roys, Dales, Pats and Bullets - not to mention all the pioneers and accessories. Now the resources are drying up and the Internet has made Stuart more obtainable to the general public. I will forever love the Stuart figures and horses. My collection knows no bounds. When I go to shows there are still some dealers who have a bag of Stuarts for me. I will never stop collecting. Life is too short.
